Why Your Social Media Advertising Is Reaching the Wrong Locations and How to Fix It

A business selects a tightly defined service area in Meta Ads, yet enquiries arrive from people elsewhere in the city or outside the area entirely. The immediate suspicion is often that Advantage+ placements ignored the targeting. That diagnosis sends the account team to the wrong setting.
Placements decide where an advert can appear across Meta's inventory. Geographic reach is controlled in the audience settings at the ad set level. If Meta is allowed to reach people beyond the selected locations, the practical correction is to open Limit your audience and keep Reach more people likely to respond to your ads switched off. That can tighten delivery, but it still needs to be checked against actual lead locations rather than assumed to be perfect.
Advantage Plus Placements Are Not Expanding Your Locations
Meta's placement automation distributes adverts across eligible surfaces such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network. Its purpose is to find cost-effective opportunities across those surfaces. It does not define the city, neighbourhood or radius a campaign is meant to serve.
This distinction matters because changing to manual placements may reduce available inventory without correcting the geographic issue. A lead from the wrong area can still arrive through an Instagram Feed placement if the audience settings permitted that person to receive the advert. Diagnose location at the audience layer first, then review placements only when the concern is where the advert appeared or how a creative rendered.
Where Social Media Advertising Location Control Actually Sits
The Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ placements are also separate systems. Meta's audience automation can use interests, custom audiences and other inputs as guidance while searching for people likely to act. Location belongs in Audience Controls, where the account can define the geographic boundary that matters to the business.
The important option is to limit your audience. In some account configurations, an existing saved audience can make this control less obvious, so the advertiser may need to change or remove it before editing the geographic limits. Meta changes Ads Manager labels and availability over time, and the exact path can differ by objective or account. The commercial principle remains stable: confirm that the chosen locations are restrictions rather than mere suggestions, and that permission to expand is granted.
How a Social Media Agency Should Apply Limiting Your Audience
Make the change at the ad-set level and record the original configuration before publishing. This creates a clean audit trail if lead volume or cost changes afterwards.
- Open the ad set and review the Audience section, not the Placements section.
- Change or remove a saved audience if it prevents the location controls from being edited clearly.
- Select "Limit your audience" and enter only the locations, pins, or radii the business can genuinely serve.
- Leave Reach, more people are likely to respond to your ads, switched off, so Meta is not given permission to broaden geographic delivery.
- Add exclusions for nearby areas only when they close a genuine boundary gap without cutting into the intended market.
- Review the audience summary, publish the change and note the date for later lead-quality comparison.
Do not try to create a Custom Audience called 'the rest of the city' and exclude it. Custom Audiences are built from identifiable people or interactions, not from a geographic shape that contains everyone outside the target area. Pins, radii, included locations, and location exclusions are the appropriate tools for that job.
Why Wrong Location Leads Can Still Appear
A tighter setting improves control, but it cannot make location identification flawless. Meta infers location from available signals, and a person can travel, work in one area, live in another or use a device whose signals do not reflect the service address they submit. A form can also be completed inside the target area for a requirement elsewhere.
That is why a wrong-location lead does not automatically prove that the ad was delivered outside the boundary. Compare the lead's submitted service location with the delivery reporting, where available. If the business serves only particular neighbourhoods, add a required area, postcode or community field to the form and state the service boundary in the advert or opening form copy. This filters unsuitable enquiries before the sales team spends time on them.
Avoid narrowing the radius repeatedly in response to a handful of anomalies. An unnecessarily small audience can restrict learning, increase frequency and raise costs. Blue Beetle's explanation of frequency controls shows why delivery pressure should be managed deliberately rather than treated as a side effect of tighter targeting.
Measure Social Media Advertising by Serviceable Leads
Ads Manager can report a low cost per lead while the sales team rejects a large share for being outside the operating area. The useful measure is cost per serviceable lead. Add the lead's submitted location, qualification outcome and reason for rejection to the CRM or lead sheet, then compare the period before and after the audience-control change.
Watch four signals together: the proportion of leads inside the service area, qualified-lead volume, cost per qualified lead and total opportunity value. If geographic fit improves while overall volume falls slightly, the campaign may still be commercially stronger. Blue Beetle's work on targeted campaigns reinforces the same principle: precision is valuable when it connects advertising to buyers the business can actually serve.
A capable social media agency should inspect this pattern weekly during the first test period. If unsuitable locations continue to dominate, check for duplicate ad sets, campaign-level settings, overlapping inclusions, old saved audiences, and whether the sales team is recording location consistently before blaming the algorithm.
Keep Meta Reach Inside the Market You Can Serve
Automation works best when the business is clear about where exploration is acceptable. Advantage+ can search broadly within the opportunities it is given, but a local service campaign should not trade geographic fit for cheaper forms that cannot become customers.
If your Meta campaigns are generating leads from the wrong areas, contact Blue Beetle. Our social media agency can audit your audience controls, lead forms and qualification data, then build a social media advertising setup that focuses budget on the locations your business can genuinely serve.
