GEO vs AEO: What an SEO Agency in Dubai Should Optimise for Now

Search strategy is collecting new acronyms faster than most marketing teams can turn them into useful decisions. GEO and AEO are often presented as competing disciplines, which encourages businesses to create separate plans, reports and content queues for each. That is rarely the right starting point. The practical issue is whether a page gives an answer engine something clear to extract and a generative engine enough evidence to trust, combine and cite.
That distinction matters because the same article can succeed at one job and fail at the other. A concise definition may be perfectly structured for an answer box but too thin to support a nuanced recommendation. A detailed guide may contain excellent evidence but bury its conclusion beneath 800 words of context. The role of an SEO agency is to diagnose which layer is weak and then improve it without turning useful content into a machine-readable template.
GEO and AEO Solve Different Problems for an SEO Agency
AEO improves the answer layer
Answer Engine Optimisation, or AEO, makes a specific answer easy to identify, understand and reuse. In Neil Patel's comparison, AEO is associated with direct answers such as featured snippets, People Also Ask results and voice responses, while GEO is concerned with content that generative systems can summarise or cite. The useful implication is not that AEO requires short articles. It means every important question on a page should have a clear answer before the supporting details expand on it.
For a service page, that may mean stating who the service is for, what the engagement includes, how long the implementation normally takes, and which variables affect the cost. For an advisory article, it means defining the decision, giving the recommendation and then explaining the conditions that could change it. Blue Beetle’s guide to answer-first content covers the structural foundations in more depth. The strategic test is simple: if the relevant paragraph were lifted out of the page, would it still answer the question accurately?
GEO strengthens the evidence layer
Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, deals with a broader selection problem. A generative response may assemble an explanation from several sources, so being readable is not enough; the page must contribute information that is specific, supportable, and useful when combined with other evidence. The original GEO study tested methods such as adding reliable citations, relevant quotations and statistics. On its benchmark, the strongest methods improved source visibility by 30 to 40 per cent on one of the study’s measures, although the authors also found that results varied by subject area. That is evidence for better sourcing, not a guarantee that adding three citations will produce a 40 per cent gain on a commercial website.
GEO therefore changes the editorial question from “Have we covered the topic?” to “What can this page contribute that a generic summary cannot?” A first-hand benchmark, a clearly explained methodology, a named expert’s judgement, or a comparison based on verifiable criteria gives a system something distinct to use. Unsupported superlatives and an authoritative tone do not. The same study found that simply making language sound more authoritative produced no consistent improvement, a useful warning against dressing ordinary claims in confident prose.
How an SEO Agency Should Audit a Page for Both
A combined audit should follow the reader’s decision path rather than treating GEO and AEO as two checklists. Start with a commercially valuable question and review the single page that should own the answer. An SEO agency can then assess four separate failure points:
- Answer clarity: Can a reader find a direct, qualified answer near the question, without interpreting a long introduction?
- Evidence quality: Are consequential claims supported by original data, a primary source, a transparent example or clearly attributed expert experience?
- Entity context: Does the page make the company, service, location, author and subject unambiguous, using consistent language across the site?
- Retrieval access: Can search systems crawl, index and understand the important text, and do internal links show how this page relates to the wider topic?
The order matters. Rewriting headings will not rescue an unsupported claim, while publishing original research will not help if the conclusion is hidden in an image or downloadable file. Google’s current guidance says that pages need no special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode; they must meet the normal requirements for indexing and snippet eligibility. It also recommends keeping important information in the text, making pages discoverable through internal links, and ensuring structured data matches the visible content. Blue Beetle’s article on site architecture explains how those page-level signals fit into a broader structure for AI discovery.
Where GEO Requires Evidence Beyond the Website
AEO improvements can often be made within the page. GEO imposes a harder constraint: a business cannot independently corroborate its own domain. If every claim about expertise, performance, or market position originates from the company itself, a generative system has little external evidence to validate the story. This makes digital PR, expert participation, customer proof, industry partnerships and accurate third-party profiles part of search visibility rather than separate brand activities.
The work should begin with claims the business wants to be known for, not a campaign to collect mentions at random. For each claim, identify the strongest proof available and the credible places where that proof could appear. A hotel technology provider claiming faster implementation, for example, would be better served by publishing a documented implementation timeline and earning a customer case study than by commissioning five general articles about innovation. The first creates evidence that can be checked; the second merely repeats positioning.
This is where an SEO agency should work with subject experts, PR and customer teams. Search visibility improves when the website’s claims, named expertise, and external references consistently describe the same entity. The objective is not to control every mention. It is to make the most important facts easy to verify across multiple credible sources.
Measure Whether AI Systems Use the Brand
Traditional rankings remain useful, but they do not indicate whether a brand is used in a generated answer. Google currently groups traffic from its AI features into the “Web” search type in Search Console, according to the same documentation, so a clean AI-only performance view is not available there. A practical measurement plan should therefore combine conventional organic outcomes with a small, controlled set of prompts.
Select 15 to 25 questions that represent real customer decisions, including comparisons, implementation concerns, suitability and cost. Test them on a consistent schedule across the search experiences that matter to the audience. Record whether the brand is mentioned, cited, accurately described and associated with the intended expertise, then keep screenshots or response exports so changes can be reviewed. Pair that visibility record with landing-page traffic, assisted conversions and qualified enquiries. The aim is not to chase a volatile “AI visibility score” but to learn which evidence and answers earn inclusion in commercially relevant conversations.
Build Answers AI Can Use and Evidence It Can Trust
The best next step is not a separate GEO content calendar. Choose one high-value page, clarify the answer it owns, replace vague claims with verifiable evidence and connect it to the strongest supporting pages and external proof. Then monitor whether the page is retrieved, cited and capable of influencing a business outcome. Teams that need a clear priority order can work with Blue Beetle to refine the answer layer, strengthen the evidence layer and build an organic search programme that earns visibility for useful reasons.
