What an SEO Agency Should Do Now That FAQ Rich Results Are Gone

Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026. A search feature that once gave selected pages extra space beneath the blue link has therefore disappeared, but the customer questions behind those pages have not. Buyers still want to know what a service costs, whether it suits their situation, how implementation works and what could go wrong. The strategic mistake would be to treat the loss of a search enhancement as proof that the answers themselves have lost value.

For an SEO agency, the change creates a useful editorial test. Every FAQ should now justify its place by demonstrating user value, commercial relevance, or a genuine role in explaining the business. Questions that existed only to occupy search-result space can be removed or rewritten. Questions that help a prospective customer make a decision should become stronger, better located and easier to act on.

Why FAQ Deprecation Matters to an SEO Agency

Google’s official updates say the FAQ rich result was deprecated and will no longer appear as of 7 May 2026. This was not a sudden reversal. In 2023, Google had already restricted the treatment largely to well-known government and health websites, explaining that most other sites would no longer receive it regularly. The feature’s removal completes that progression and gives commercial websites little reason to retain FAQ markup purely for a Google Search display benefit.

Three separate assets are often bundled together in discussions of this change: the visible question and answer, the page that contains it, and the structured data that describes it. Only Google’s rich result treatment has been withdrawn. A well-written answer can still reduce uncertainty on a service page, strengthen the page’s topical coverage and give sales teams a resource to share. Likewise, FAQPage remains a defined Schema.org type, although being a valid vocabulary does not mean Google will create a special result from it.

That distinction matters because indiscriminate deletion can make a site less useful without creating any search advantage. Google’s earlier guidance said unused FAQ structured data could be removed, but also stated that leaving it in place caused no problem for Search and produced no visible effect. The sensible response is therefore an audit based on purpose, not a sitewide purge based on fear.

The FAQ Audit Every SEO Agency Should Run

Begin with the pages that attract meaningful organic traffic or support an important service. Export their search queries, review the questions raised in sales calls and note where visitors hesitate before contacting the business. An SEO agency in Dubai might find that a generic question about the benefits of SEO earns impressions but changes no decision, while a precise explanation of contract length or reporting resolves a real objection. Search volume is a useful context, but it should not overrule what prospective customers repeatedly need to know.

For each FAQ block or standalone page, work through one practical checklist:

  • Define the question’s job: qualification, objection handling, process explanation, policy clarification or customer support.
  • Check ownership: place the answer on the page where a reader naturally needs it, rather than repeating it across unrelated pages.
  • Test specificity: replace generic advice with the conditions, examples and limitations that make the answer useful to this business and audience.
  • Review overlap: merge near-identical questions and remove boilerplate that adds no information beyond the surrounding copy.
  • Confirm the next step: connect decision-stage answers to a relevant service, case study, consultation or deeper guide.
  • Record the markup: identify whether the FAQPage data is still present, whether another system consumes it and who owns future maintenance.

The output should not be a longer FAQ section. It should be a smaller set of answers with clearer jobs. If an answer only repeats a claim already made on the page, integrate the useful detail into the main copy. If the question represents a distinct search or customer need that requires evidence, examples or exceptions, develop it into a dedicated section or resource. This avoids the common pattern of hiding important information inside a twenty-item accordion that few readers can scan efficiently.

Keep the Answer, Reconsider the Markup

Separate schema validity from Google eligibility

Structured data should describe visible content accurately and serve a known use case. Google’s policies make clear that correct markup never guarantees a rich result, so technical validity and search eligibility must be assessed separately. Use the Rich Results Test to check which features Google currently supports. Use the Schema Markup Validator when the task is to confirm that generic Schema.org syntax is valid, because Google’s structured-data documentation distinguishes those two purposes.

This leads to a simple maintenance decision. Remove FAQPage markup when it exists solely for a discontinued Google feature and is not used by publishing, voice, knowledge management, or downstream systems. Keep it when it accurately describes the page and supports a documented technical requirement, but do not present retention as an AI visibility tactic. The markup must also be updated whenever the visible answer changes; stale structured data creates maintenance work without a clear benefit.

Write answers for decisions, not snippets

Google’s current AI guidance says there is no special schema required for its generative search features and recommends the same foundations used in established SEO: useful content, clear page structure, crawlable text and structured data that matches what users can see. An FAQ label is therefore less important than whether the answer is direct, qualified and supported. State the answer first, then explain the variables that change it and offer evidence where the decision carries cost or risk.

Location also matters. A pricing qualification belongs close to the service and scope it qualifies. An implementation concern may sit beside the process, timeline or onboarding explanation. A detailed comparison may deserve its own page and an internal link from the relevant service. Blue Beetle’s guide to website structure explains how clear page roles and internal relationships help both people and search systems understand a site. Treating every question as an FAQ at the bottom of the page often separates the answer from the moment it is most persuasive.

How an SEO Agency Should Measure FAQ Content

The old question was whether FAQ markup produced a rich result. The better question is whether the underlying content improves discovery or helps a visitor progress. Before editing, record the page’s organic clicks, impressions, relevant queries, enquiries and assisted conversions. Annotate the publication date, then compare equivalent periods while accounting for seasonality, wider ranking changes and other page edits. A before-and-after comparison is not a controlled experiment, but it is more informative than judging the work by total traffic alone.

Measurement should match the question’s intended job. A qualification answer may reduce poor-fit enquiries, so fewer form submissions can accompany better sales acceptance. An objection-handling answer may increase visits to a case study or contact page without creating an immediate conversion. Support content may reduce the number of repeated service queries. An accordion opens, and scroll depth can indicate that people reached an answer, but it cannot show whether the answer was trusted or useful; combine behavioural signals with conversion quality, sales feedback, and periodic user testing.

Search reporting should also be read at the query and page level. Watch whether the revised page gains or loses visibility for the exact decisions it was designed to address, rather than expecting a single FAQ performance report to provide the answer. As Blue Beetle’s GEO guidance explains, clear answers and credible evidence solve different problems. Monitor discovery, engagement and commercial outcomes as separate layers so a gain in one is not mistaken for success across all three.

Useful Answers Still Earn Their Place

The disappearance of FAQ rich results removes one incentive for publishing question-and-answer content, and that is healthy. It gives marketers permission to retire repetitive blocks, move important explanations into the customer journey and judge each answer by the decision it helps someone make. The winning outcome is not perfect schema coverage. It is a site where the right concern is resolved in the right place with enough detail to build confidence.

If your website still contains legacy FAQ schema, duplicated answers or service pages that leave important questions unresolved, contact Blue Beetle. Work with an SEO agency that can audit the content, structured data and customer journey together, then prioritise the changes most likely to improve clarity, visibility and qualified enquiries.
